We are a different kind/ We can do anything /  We could be heroes /  We could be heroes”

— David Bowie, Brian Eno

It is hard to tell after attending the Best Buddies Prom, who is the hero to whom. Though school has been out due to the snow, Best Buddies Prom still went on Sunday night at Bridgestone Arena. The program, Best Buddies, pairs peer volunteers with students who who are in classes that require assistance, and thus a Best Bud friendship is formed – most often for a lifetime.

Best Buddies is dedicated to integrating those with special needs in employment and school where they can learn and build relationships. Best Buddies breaks the barrier that separates those with learning disabilities and those without.

This was the 5th annual Best Buddies prom. Held at Bridgestone Arena, hundreds came from many different high schools and colleges all over Nashville. Glammed up in prom dresses and suits, students strutted down a “yellow carpet” to the venue. Once inside, people filled the dance floor.

Anybody’s got the power/  They just don’t see it /  ‘Cause they don’t understand it/  We spin around and round for hours/   You and me/  we got the world in our hand/ We can heroes/ Just for one day ”

— Bowie & Eno

From the Cha Cha Slide to The Wobble, everyone showed his or her best moves. Karaoke was held on a stage where everyone could participate. From Taylor Swift to Beyonce, many songs were sung. Catered food from pizza to Sweet Cece’s was provided. There were also designated photo booths where people could dress up and hold props for a photo. Students posed for pictures, sang along to songs, and danced the night away.

“We get to interact with them, dance with them, talk to them, learn their names and what school they go to,” said Overton student Areen Finnegan. “We shook it. And took pictures,” said Louise, apart of Best Buddies at Overton. The night was an overall success.

Everyday people/  do everyday things/ but I can’t be one of them/ ’til I know you hear me now/ We are a different kind/  We can do anything ”

— Bowie, Eno

It was a great experience for Overton and the whole Best Buddies community. Katie Harton, founder of Best Buddies at Overton said, “It’s a great experience for Overton because, it makes everyone all conclusive, nobody gets left behind, everybody has fun, and it’s a real good way to spread awareness for people with disabilities.”
