U.S Army came to John Overton High on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 and hundreds of O’Town students had the opportunity to engage in science, technology engineering and mathematics activities the armed forces has to offer in a post secondary world.

The Army STEM Truck is ” (Science Technology Engineering Math) vehicle put students in a scenario where they can put their knowledge and problem solving abilities to the test. The mission is humanitarian focused and requires students to use Army technology to complete the task.”

The Army STEM truck was parked front and center of the school and had many different stations students could work through to see how science, engineering, math and technology are used in the army. Many students enjoy this and had many questions for the sergeants who were stationed along the stations to answer questions.

Sergeant Cartagena Vazquez & Sergeant Jackson were prepared to to show students how the army would enable students to become career ready following a period of time while enlisted.

The Bobcat Beat had the chance to interview both sergeants and ask more about this amazing STEM truck.

Bobcat Beat : Exactly what kind of truck is this?

Sergeant Cartagena Vazquez : This used to train our people in a systemic way through the use of interaction. Some of the activities include a virtual reality helicopter to experience how it feels to fly and  it also has a shooting range to teach people how to properly aim and acquire target.  It also has a rollercoaster, when you put the goggles on , and actually feels like your actually in it. People sometimes come out dizzy and throwing up. People go inside that truck to experience how its like in the army.

Bobcat Beat: Why is this truck important?

Sergeant Jackson: The truck is important because it has just allows young adults considering the army as a career a chance  to experience some of the jobs that are offered on the Army, whether you want to fly a helicopter or you want to be operating explosive robots, virtual reality which is the future of the military. It is important because it highlights only a few jobs with the army, we have over 150 jobs, yet it allows us a chance to describe other jobs we have to offer.  So we over 40 different vehicles within our units so each vehicle has a little bit different about the Army.

Bobcat Beat: What students would you want to try this?

Srgt. Jackson : Well in this market we would like for juniors and seniors in high schools to experience the awesome features of our virtual reality truck. We would, of course to talk to them about some of the options that are available in the army, but we also want to show them the opportunities that are available, in general, in the field of STEM occupations. You don’t necessarily have to enlist in the Army, but you would like to know what options are available .Our objective is to make you aware of the options that available, scholarship program, different things like that.

The Army truck is designed to place students in the future.

The year is 2032. The world faces unique challenges tied to enviromental disaster and continued political strife. A fresh, new perspective is needed to solve the latest challenges. For more information, ARMY STEM TRUCK
