So you need a ride to work, but no one can take you? Who are you going to call especially when you don’t want to be late. Everyone has heard of Uber and Lyft – the service that can easily transport you to go anywhere at any time. The rides are reliable and you do not have to make any phone calls. The apps also offers for your friends and family to follow your route and know when to expect you.

Uber was founded in 2009 by the founders Travis Kalanick and Garret Camp. There is about 6,700 employees and they get paid instantly. It is an American worldwide online transportation network company headquartered in San Francisco, California. There is also a transportation network called UberEATS for delivering food. This was started in August 2014 by the same founders.

“I became an Uber driver to make some extra money,” says Mike Strasinger. “The flexible hours are the best part. I only drive when I want to. I can on or offline anytime. Uber does a background check, and I have to provide them with documents proving I have a valid driver’s license, proper insurance, and that the vehicle is properly registered. The vehicle must meet their standards, but I don’t really know what they all are. I have a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox that is in pretty good shape. I keep it nice and clean.

“I have driven for Uber for 3 years now with over 2000 trips made. I have not had any problems at all. The people I have dealt with have all been really cool. I don’t like to drive very late at night, so I don’t deal with a lot of really, really drunk people. The later you drive, the drunker the people get. But, I like the fact that I am providing a service that helps reduce the amount of drink drivers on the road. All in all, Uber is exactly the perfect type of side job for me. I am a freelance photographer, and my income is very inconsistent. Uber helps fill in the gaps.”

“I’ve been working with Uber for 9 and a half months now, and it’s convenient because you can stop whenever you want,” says Garrid who works for Uber. He says, “I do feel pressure by people sometimes because when they are drunk, they say cruel things.” Garrid told me a story about a woman who was under the influence, and she was nervous about him taking her home. “Being an uber driver comes with a lot of security because we have to get a background check and insurance paperwork.” My ride with him was complicated at first because it was my first time using Uber, but it eventually it was relaxing.

Mrs. Anderson says, “I had a few reservations about safety, but I thought it sounded like a convenient alternative to traditional cabs. I felt happy to get a ride and my driver didn’t make me feel uncomfortable. My husband travels extensively for work, and he tends to prefer Uber, so that is what we typically use. I think if you use their app frequently there are some incentives.”

“When I first heard of Uber/Lyft, first couldn’t believe it is that easy to get a ride somewhere,” says Mr. Vaughn. ‘It is much more convenient than a cab. I enjoy Lyft drivers. I have not had as good experiences with UBER. They can be hit or miss. Lyft drivers usually go out of their way to make you comfortable, and I prefer Lyft over Uber hands down.”

Whether you choose a taxi cab, Uber or Lyft, it is apparent that having a choice is a hit in Nashville.
