Mo’s Elite 11: Top five holdin’ it down

There’s something to be said for being in the top half of Mo’s Elite 11, if last week is any indication. Four of the top five teams posted big wins, with the fifth enjoying an off week. Check out who did what, and what happened from No. 6 down, as we approach Week 5.

Oakland (3-0): The Patriots were idle in Week 4, following a big Region 2-6A win over Siegel. Talented performers continues to emerge for the Oakland squad besides key Southeastern Commitments JaCoby Stevens (Louisiana State) and Kaleb Oliver (Mississippi State). Last week: 1. Next up: Friday at Blackman (1-1).

2. Brentwood Acad. (3-1): A clash with winless A+ Academy out of Texas went about as expected, with the Eagles posting a 65-18 victory. Brentwood Academy led 58-0 at halftime as QBs Jeremiah Oatsvall and Gavin Schoenwald combined for 270 offensive yards and four TDs. Last week: 2. Next up: Friday vs. Baylor (4-0).

3. Independence (4-0): Forcing seven turnovers, the Eagles overcame a sputtering offensive performance to claim a 21-7 win at Smyrna. Mississippi State commitment Landon Guidry blocked a punt, had a sack and an interception, and scored a rushing TD to pace the victory. Last week: 3. Next up: Friday at Summit (3-1).

4. Montgomery Bell Acad. (3-1): The Big Red took care of business, scoring three first-quarter TDs and rolling to a 45-0 victory over visiting Memphis Hamilton. RB Ty Chandler’s string of 14 straight 100-yard efforts ended, with 77 yards – and three TDs – on five carries. Last week: 4. Next up: Friday vs. McCallie (3-1).

5. Marshall Co. (4-0): Jay Howard caught seven balls for 114 yards and two TDs – including a 39-yarder to get his team on the scoreboard – and the Tigers posted 27 unanswered points in a 41-7 win at East Nashville. Bryce Wallace threw for 301 yards and four scores. Last week: 5. Next up: Friday vs. Giles County (3-1).

6. Cane Ridge (4-0): Building on an overtime victory over Hendersonville in a key Region 6-5A matchup, the Ravens stayed perfect by dealing Metro Nashville rival McGavock a 50-14 decision in nonleague action. Cane Ridge grabbed a 36-7 halftime advantage en route to the win. Last week: 7. Next up: Friday at Beech (3-1).
